FAQ

Behaviour Support is a person-centred approach that aims to improve quality of life by understanding and safely addressing behaviours that may be harmful or risky to the individual or others. It focuses on the individual, their environment, and what matters most to them. This approach values, respects, and protects the person’s rights, dignity, and wellbeing.

The goal of Behaviour Support is to empower individuals to lead a fulfilling life by fostering positive relationships, promoting choice and control, developing new skills, and enabling active participation in their community.

The Behaviour Support Practitioner takes the time to understand the Participant and the important people in their life. They assess what is working well and identify areas that need improvement, focusing on building strengths. The practitioner helps to understand the underlying reasons for the behaviour and creates a Behaviour Support Plan. They work closely with the Participant and their support team to implement the plan, monitor progress, and adjust strategies as needed to ensure ongoing success.

A Behaviour Support Plan captures important details about the participant, including their history and circumstances. It outlines proactive and preventative strategies designed to reduce negative behaviours, while also providing response strategies to guide how others can support the individual when they experience strong emotions or challenging behaviours.

Restrictive practices are interventions used to ensure safety by temporarily limiting a person’s movement or activities or alters their behaviour. They are considered only as a last resort and must be implemented in accordance with strict guidelines to ensure the person’s rights and dignity are respected.

They are used to prevent harm, with the goal of gradually reducing or eliminating them over time through the use of positive behaviour support strategies.
